Art Journalling with Kasia

Hello Lovelies.. so happy to be here with you all again in 2018! Lets kick start this year with a little art journalling. I don't know about you but I look at so many amazing journal pages with the most beautiful drawings of faces.. well, I'm not terrible at it but sometimes I just want to play and not think, so when I saw these stamps from Jane Davenport I ordered them straight away.

These take the stress of drawing all those features and just let you play with flowing hair and all the other elements of the page. By all means, if you are ok with drawing, go forth and draw... lol!

I stamped one of my little faces in my X-Press It Mixed Media Journal which has lovely watercolour paper pages, as I knew I will be using a lot of water without using Gesso. 

I wet down my page with a wide brush and clean water and grabbed.. wait for it.. my Colour Artist Inks and dropped ink around where the hair would be. I didn't know at this stage how I wanted the hair, so I let the ink work that out for me.

I decided to go with upward flowing hair and painted thin lines with the Soot Colour Artist Ink and then went over them with a little water so the colour would spread a little. I let the page dry really well and went in with my Sharpie and solidified the lines a little. 

I then messily danced my brush and the Colour Artist Inks on the bottom of my page to create some grounding for my girl. While I had the Soot Ink out, I added a good amount of splatters in the background, making sure I covered the face while I did this. 

I love doodling so while watching telly I got my journal and added a whole bunch of dots to the hair. 

I then got out my white gel pen an added some white details. 

I continued doodling and added waves so I had some place holders for my text 'great things never came from comfort zones'.

I'm still so in love with these inks and how beautifully vibrant the colours are.

"Miss Five" by Gwen Wruck

Hi Creative Friends,

Gwen here with you on the blog today with my latest layout.  This one features my little Miss and a photo taken on her 5th birthday.  She was such a princess at this age and I will admit, I love love loved it!  Think princesses, unicorns, fairies and all things magical - that certainly was her at this age.  I have scrapped many photos already from this birthday party, so for this one, I really just wanted to document her age and for it to have that sweet soft princess vibe about it.

This page started with the idea to use a cut file word that was repeated over and over on my background.  I have done similar things in the past and always loved how they worked out.  (You don't have to re-invent the wheel for every layout you know.) I wanted the words to stand out from the white background so I added some Colour Shimmer Spray in Envy to my background.  I used the packaging technique as well as adding splatters straight from the nozzle.

Next, I set about cutting out my words.  I went with "Love this moment" and cut it out 6 times.  I then sprayed the words with the Colour Shimmer Spray in Blush.  I made sure to spray un-evenly, I wanted a textured look that had the colour deeper in some areas than others.

Once dried, I then layered over my background and stitched down.  I just love how my die cut pieces sit on top of the background. It is the perfect base for my paper layers in my photo mat.  You can see here I did not stitch them down perfectly, the bits that sit up off the page add interest and I love the effect.

Next, it was time to add my photo and embellishing.  I started with a large photo mat paper cluster and added bits and pieces until I was happy.

I went with puffy stickers, wooden hearts, vellum butterflies and chipboard, all to add texture and interest.  I also wanted a lot of pretty embellishments on this one to fit with the Princess theme.

Here you can see a close up of the Envy in the background and the Blush on the die cut pieces.

I give this project a "mess level" of Low.  Very little mess and a really clean look.  I did consider adding some splatters in at the end and then decided against it as there was a lot going on embellishment wise.  

Thanks for popping by today, I hope this page inspires you to pull out your Colour Shimmer Sprays and die cut machine and give this kind of background a go.  If you don't have a Silhouette or similar, you could also do this with a Sizzix or Cuttlebug machine and why not give other elements a try such as flowers, or border pieces.  I love this technique and I think you will too :)

"Unforgettable Fun" by Sue Plumb

Hi everyone, happy new year!
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas period with family and friends and you are now ready and raring to go for another year filled with Colour Blast fun!

Given that we are still in the midst of summer holidays here in Australia, I thought I would create a layout that is not only simple to put together, but is also perfect for hot summer days.

I started this page by creating my background using a variety of Colour Blast products. First, I wanted to lay down some very subtle colour; so I used Tangareen Dream Colour Shimmer Spray and lightly brushed it onto my page with a wide brush. (I simply poured a small amount into a cup to allow me to dip my brush into it.) Once I had brushed the spray on, I used some of the left overs to splatter around the page.

Next, I wanted to add some contrast and texture, so I used Colour Pastes and used my photo as inspiration for the colours. First I used Fire Engine to echo the dark pink-red; and then used Tangareen Dream to accentuate more of the orange tone. Each of them was applied by smearing the paste thinly around the page using a small palette knife.

At this point I decided the page needed more "mess" factor, so I looked to my photo for further inspiration. I noted the small pops of yellow and the dominance of orange tones, so I  decided to add some more vibrant splatters using the new Colour Artist Inks. First, I splattered around some Barley, then repeated it with Citrus before setting my page aside to dry.

Once my page was dry, I decided I needed to add one final colour for some contrast. As all the ones I had used were warm tones, I decided to add a cool tone for extra visual interest. Again, my photo provided guidance, as there were small pops of green visible in the background. This time I used a Colour Shimmer Cube in Apple of My Eye.

The next step in my process was to create the focal area of my layout where my photo strip was going to be placed. I created a simple layered mat using papers and stickers from the Cocoa Vanilla Studio 'Endless Summer' collection.

I then used a beautiful floral paper from the same collection and fussy cut some of the hibiscus flowers from it to place around my photos to help frame it.

After I had the flowers in place, I added my photo strip on top, using some scrap cardboard to mount it on. 

After the photo strip was in place, I embellished my page using some extra coordinating stickers and die cut pieces.

For my title, I used a combination of a sticker and a die cut, mounting the die cut word fun up with foam tape to give it dimension and help it pop from the page a bit.

To finish off, I added a few stamped phrases and the date and my page was complete.

So for what was a relatively simple process, I am very happy with the result. You could try a similar design. Create your own background by layering up a few Colour Blast products; then choose some coordinating papers and stickers.

The first thing I did was collect a few items I thought would make a good page.

With my black background I sprayed Colour Shimmer Spray Deep Water straight onto the cardstock.

I then used the same spray to add some background splatter.

I felt like the background still needed something ... so I dug out one of my favourite stencils and added some Colour Paste in Steel.

I like to allow my backgrounds to dry naturally, so once dry, 

apply white Heavy Gesso around the outside to make a frame.

For me I like to apply this part pretty rough and messy - I think it adds to the final layout.

I've then added some water to the white gesso and used a fan type brush to add some background splatters.

Final steps to complete the page are the photo cluster and embellishing.

Don't you just love how the colour shimmer spray looks on black???

"fun" by Mal

Hi all, 

Mal here with this month's challenge....drum roll...

The challenge this month is 

So I started with my black background, gessoed the areas I was going to use with some Heavy White Gesso. 

Then thought as the cardstock is dark I have to have some bright colours on my background, so chose some Colour Pastes in Sunshine, Deep Water and Singin the Blues  and smeared some pastes in different areas.

Next I sprayed a raw wood veneer title with Colour Spray in Carribean and some chipboard stars with Sunshine Colour Shimmer Spray and Carribean Colour Spray.

 After drying, I assembled it all, stapled it down and I'm done.

Challenge Done!

So what an awesome challenge hey...great sketch hey.
