Hey Colour Blasters and welcome to the blog today! I have a pretty share for you today - something somewhat different for me but today I am scrapping an older photo of me and one of my besties so went pretty!! Here's a little sneaky peek ;)

I have used this month's challenge as inspiration and if you have not yet seen it here it is!

And here are my step-by-steps!

A quick, light coat of White Heavy Gesso across my whole 12x12 white cardstock background. By the time I had cleaned up my spatula and work surface the gesso was dry!

I have 2 tubs of white gesso on the go at once - one is thicker than the other. To get your gesso to thicken up just leave it with the lid off while you create your next page and keep doing that until you get the desired consistency! However, I digress, I used my thicker White Heavy Gesso to apply through a stencil on my background. I taped off the parts of the stencil I didn't want the gesso to go through. This I left to dry overnight - I didn't want it to bubble and have the really textured, grungy look.

The next day I used a pipette to add some Colour Shimmer Spray's to a palette to make easy water colouring. I have used Punch, Sunshine and Tangereen Dream (to fit in with this months challenge).

I then added the colour randomly to my dried stencilling in patches, letting the colours blend a little together so I didn't get any harsh lines. I did dry after each colour to prevent the colours from completely blending together and really like the pretty background I have managed to create. I, of course, also added splatters in the same colours but keeping them pretty close in and small.

When that was all dry it was time to add all my layers and photo. I have primarily used the Vicki Boutin All The Good Things range because I knew there were birds in the ephemera pack and I love all the colours!

After my camera was turned off I added a few extra pieces including the torn edge on the left hand side and some black and white phrases. 

With those pops of black I also watered down a little Black Heavy Gesso and added some little splatters with a paint brush and 3 big splatters on the vertical where most of my design is. It's not very common for me to not have anything to say on my pages but for this one I felt those word/phrase stickers were enough and said what I wanted to say so I'm calling it done!

"Miss Five" by Gwen Wruck

Hi Creative Friends,

Gwen here with you on the blog today with my latest layout.  This one features my little Miss and a photo taken on her 5th birthday.  She was such a princess at this age and I will admit, I love love loved it!  Think princesses, unicorns, fairies and all things magical - that certainly was her at this age.  I have scrapped many photos already from this birthday party, so for this one, I really just wanted to document her age and for it to have that sweet soft princess vibe about it.

This page started with the idea to use a cut file word that was repeated over and over on my background.  I have done similar things in the past and always loved how they worked out.  (You don't have to re-invent the wheel for every layout you know.) I wanted the words to stand out from the white background so I added some Colour Shimmer Spray in Envy to my background.  I used the packaging technique as well as adding splatters straight from the nozzle.

Next, I set about cutting out my words.  I went with "Love this moment" and cut it out 6 times.  I then sprayed the words with the Colour Shimmer Spray in Blush.  I made sure to spray un-evenly, I wanted a textured look that had the colour deeper in some areas than others.

Once dried, I then layered over my background and stitched down.  I just love how my die cut pieces sit on top of the background. It is the perfect base for my paper layers in my photo mat.  You can see here I did not stitch them down perfectly, the bits that sit up off the page add interest and I love the effect.

Next, it was time to add my photo and embellishing.  I started with a large photo mat paper cluster and added bits and pieces until I was happy.

I went with puffy stickers, wooden hearts, vellum butterflies and chipboard, all to add texture and interest.  I also wanted a lot of pretty embellishments on this one to fit with the Princess theme.

I give this project a "mess level" of Low.  Very little mess and a really clean look.  I did consider adding some splatters in at the end and then decided against it as there was a lot going on embellishment wise.  

Thanks for popping by today, I hope this page inspires you to pull out your Colour Shimmer Sprays and die cut machine and give this kind of background a go.  If you don't have a Silhouette or similar, you could also do this with a Sizzix or Cuttlebug machine and why not give other elements a try such as flowers, or border pieces.  I love this technique and I think you will too :)

‘Treasured’ by Amy Churchward

Hi Colour Blasters! Amy here today with my mixed media layout on canvas that I have called ‘Treasured’.

 First, with a foam roller, I covered my canvas with Heavy White Gesso. This stuff dries very quickly. It is great to use on a variety of projects. 

 

Using a cobblestone stencil and spatula I applied 'Leather' Colour Paste to my liking with the photo placement in mind. 

 

 

I used a heat gun to further speed up the drying process - it doesn't take long to air dry, though.

 
Next, using Leather Colour Shimmer Spray, I added a layer over the dry stencilled paste and held the canvas up so that it ran and added coverage.

 

Using the end of the stalk, I dabbed in between the cracks of the cobblestone randomly with Deep Water Colour Shimmer Spray to break up the brown, to my liking.

 

The background was in need of some shine, so I sprayed the whole surface with the stunning Bling Colour Shimmer Spray.

Once I was happy with the coverage, using a script stamp and a permanent brown ink stamp, I stamped around the canvas.

 

Now it’s time to prepare the embellishments. 😊

 Using a heat gun, I heat embossed my chipboard using the Bling Colour Embossing Powder.

 

To add a bit of Colour Shimmer to the background papers I used the divine Sienna Colour Shimmer Cube. By applying a bit of water to the cube with a brush then I splattered it around.

 

I also splattered it onto black paper flowers: the Sienna and black are the perfect match!

 

Using a bit of tissue paper, I rubbed it with some Caribbean Colour Spray and water.

 

Then stamped it with a pattern of my choice using a permanent pack stamp ink.

 

After I prepared my embellishments, I then assembled the canvas to my liking with the photo placed and adhered.

Shine with Melinda Sweetman

Hi and hello Colour Blast fans, Melinda here with you today sharing a 12x12 layout I made!

You can see my process here on the YT channel and you can read on for a full step-by-step.

Ok, so first up I started with a white piece of cardstock, some gyprock tape (the fun things we find in the husbands workshop ;) ) and some White Heavy Gesso. I totally forgot to take a photo but I quickly stuck down some of the tape in 2 places - where the photo was going (top left third of the page) and the bottom right hand corner. You can see the tape in a couple of close ups below. Once that was stuck down I applied a quick coat of gesso with a paintbrush.

Next up I added colour. Again I have used the beautiful Colour Shimmer Dust this time in Navy. I added a little water, mixed them up and applied some water to the page and then used a big brush to apply the colour to over the top of the gessoed tape. And then I used the same brush for some sprinkles of the colour.

I put that aside to dry and then got to work on my chipboard.

I have used 2 pieces which I have cut up to go behind my photo. I decided to go with the Just Blue Colour Embossing Powder so I used my ink dabber to apply embossing ink, then sprinkled on the embossing powder and heat set on all the chippy.

I can't believe this is the 1st time I have used this beautiful colour but oh, I just love, love, love it and so glad I added it to my stash!

Next up I did some stamping with some black Archival ink. I have used a stitching stamp and some word stamps and I just stamped all over the place, some vertically and some horizontally.

And my final addition to the background was some ink splatters using both the Roadbase Colour Spray and the Bling Colour Shimmer Spray.

I left that to air dry and then got to putting my page together. I have used mostly a wet adhesive due to the mixed media in the background and I just love how this page came out in the end!
