A Spritz of Watercolour by Melissa Struhs

To be honest, it has been such a long time since I have used mists that I was really excited to get to play with the new colours in these Colour Blast shimmer sprays. When I think about what styles are currently on trend in the scrapbooking world, watercolour techniques are definitely high up on the list. So I figured that would be a great place to start.

I have started by giving my shimmer sprays a very thorough shake (the shimmer settles very quickly, so I have made a new habit of doing this everytime I pick up the bottle, even if it has only been used a few minutes before) and randomly sprayed over my craft mat, for this project I have used 'Lovely Lilac' and 'Just Blue'. The product has a lovely pooling effect at this stage and this creates the gorgeous background.

Then place a piece of watercolour paper face down on the mat and press firmly all over. This helps soak up the shimmer spray.

When you flip your paper back over, this is what it may look like.

From this point, it is a process of alternating between drying the project with your heat guns, spraying with water. This helps the colours blend together and creates a completely unique look.

You can add more sprays, flicks or droplets of the shimmer spray to get the intensity of colour you are looking for. Just keep going until you are happy with the result.

As I have constructed my layout, I made the decision to layer a piece of opaque vellum over the shimmer spray to create an interesting look with the watercolour background. It really softened the effect in some spots, it also allows you cover elements that may have turned out a bolder that you expected.

My chipboard pieces have had 2 layers of matching embossing colours added, the Just Blue on the outer pieces and Lovely Lilac on the heart inserts. I love the contrast of the blue and purple together, quite striking as a colour palette.

I hope this technique gets you inspired to try out your Colour Blast products and create a watercolour background too.
